Affordable Housing: A Call for Help

With memes flooding social media outlets and bemoaning heard from all age groups, it's no joke that more affordable homes are a necessity to our future home ownership endeavors.

What's the Issue Here?

Arizona is facing a significant need for affordable housing due to various factors such as:

• Rapid population growth leading to increased demand for housing

• Rising housing costs outpacing wage growth

• Lack of affordable rental options for low-income families

• Homelessness and housing insecurity affecting vulnerable populations

• Challenges in accessing affordable housing in urban areas AND rural areas

Addressing the need for affordable housing in our local areas is crucial to ensure that all residents have access to safe, stable, and affordable housing options.

One solution was created by Yavapai County and their Development Services department, called "A Home of My Own! Program", where anyone can freely download and use pre-approved plans for building a single-family house anywhere in Yavapai County. They even allow people to use these plans anywhere outside of Yavapai County as long as you handle your own permit submittal requirements in your own county like Maricopa or Coconino.

Approving plans can be a hassle, with months long wait times for review and not to forget the thousands of dollars in design work. Programs like "A Home of My Own" provide an excellent low-cost (FREE) alternative to home planning, allowing future homeowners to focus their minds on creatively designing their home's character instead of fretting over redline corrections.
